This Ted Talk is about how women in Arab countries can’t be educated for religious, political, or social reasons. Laura Boushnak uses ethos by opening that she is from an Arab country and that she had to experience the struggle first hand. Her main point is that women in Arab Countries have obstacles that prevent them from getting an education. This Ted Talk has an emotional appeal because it talks about all the things that we take for granted. Kids in America complain about having to get up early and go to school, but these women risk their lives daily to go to school. She is a photographer and she decided to take pictures of women who had changed their life through education. She had to tell the women who were participating that their pictures would inspire others and change other women’s lives. A way that she kept the audience engaged is by talking about the subjects that she photographed and told their stories. A quote that made me emotional is when she was discussing one of her subjects and she said “ Fayza knew that her only way to control her life was through education” (Boushnak).
This Ted Talk relates to the global dream because by educating women, it causes the world to become a better place. This is not only because this makes women happier but because by teaching them, they can teach others. This will cause a chain reaction that causes the world to become more informed one women at a time. This talk relates to the American Dream because by educating women, they will have an easier time time in the workforce. Once they enter the workforce with an education, they can have higher paying jobs which pay more money. This will cause them to be able to make a better, more viable life to live. This will also cause women to have to be less dependent on men (as discussed in blog post number 5). Although Boushnak’s talk is specifically about women in Arab countries, the struggles that women face are applicable across the world. In the Great Gatsby, I think Daisy eludes to this when she talks about her daughter and says, “I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool – that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool” (Fitzgerald). I think she is talking about how little women were allowed to do and how unhappy of a life it is to not be able to use all you talents and abilities.
