In this talk Dan Pallotta uses jokes to keep the audience engaged and interested in what he had to say. He also talked about the courage it took for astronauts to travel to the moon and the courage it took for homosexuals to come out and tied them together. It was very interesting for him to do this and it kept the audience focused on what he had to say. Dan Pallotta’s main point was that we need to dream in multiple dimensions, by this he means we need to be able to set the bar higher for our dreams. We don’t need to settle for success at the expense of our personal relationships or our happiness. He wants to know why we limit ourselves, why can’t we have all three. He said, “...there was something about Apollo that I didn't know when I was 8, and something about organizing that the rainbow colors over. Of the 30 astronauts in the original Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, only seven marriages survived. Those iconic images of the astronauts bouncing on the Moon obscure the alcoholism and depression on Earth… You can go to the Moon or you can have stability in your family life. And we can't conceive of dreaming in both dimensions at the same time” (Pallotta). Although this is a long piece of evidence, I think that it illustrates his point very well. If you listen to his whole talk, he talks about the astronauts and how amazed he was when they set foot on the moon, but he says that he did not see that there was more to their lives than just being on the moon. He then goes on to explain that nowadays it seems that you can pick either being on the moon or having a stable marriage/emotional life, but he challenges people to work for both. Why can’t we go to the moon and love others to the moon-and-back?
This relates to the American dream because in our capitalist country, many people will sacrifice anything to be on top and to be successful, which in the long run, could hurt them emotionally. Pallotta wants everyone to “dream in both dimensions” so that they may work to accomplish both success and happiness, which I think is much needed in our country. This relates to our class because we have talked about the American Dream and I think that part of that is whatever makes you happy. America is where you have the freedom to do what makes you happy (with a few boundaries). In class, we watched an episode of 20/20 called “Hidden America” there were many people who were struggling to make ends meet, yet some of them were happy and some were constantly feeling negative emotions. I think that Pallotta is talking to the people who are hardworking and happy and is saying that people need to be like them and have a mentality like theirs. I liked this TED talk very much. It made me think about Psychology and how high suicide rates are in America. Maybe if people tried to dream in multiple dimensions like he talks about, the numbers would be lower. I learned from this that you should never give up everything, just to accomplish something in one aspect of your life. Never settle, you can do more than you think. Everyone was given so many capabilities, you can achieve in more aspects of your life than just one.
